In order to have an effective drainage system you need to make sure you have sufficient capacity and pitch, tight sealing, and proper venting. Used water carries waste and the waste creates unpleasant and potentially harmful gasses, all these must be drained out of the house, for continence and for your health.
If the drainage system is well planned, gravity will do the rest of the job for you. Drainage parts are pitched or sloped downhill, they need to be wide enough in diameter and smooth enough from the inside to allow the free flow of liquid and solid waste through it, and to prevent the accumulation or standing of waste at any point.
Fixture drainage lines
Drainage lines must be pitched towards the sewer, a ¼ –inch pitch per foot is supposed to allow all waste to move freely. Of course higher pitches can be implemented and will result in a stronger flow. Drainage line pipes should have elbows of 45 degrees to minimize flow resistance.
Septic systems
Drainage system malfunction can affect the health of the entire community, because of that strict regulation governing private or individual sewer systems exist. The best individual sewage system is the septic tank. The septic tank location will be determined by the lay of the land, since the drainage should be downhill and away from any water supply. Usually the septic tank will be tar-coated steel or concrete, when the raw sewage gets into the septic tank, a process starts where bacterial action breaks down the solids into liquids and gasses. These liquids and gasses drain off through an outlet sewer into a box that distributes them into the disposal field. The ground absorbs and cleans the waste through natural process of decay.
Cleanout plugs
When there is a blockage somewhere in the plumbing system the importance of cleanout becomes apparent. Plumbing stoppages occur because of an accumulation of hair, foreign objects lodged in a drainage line, or any accumulation of grease, fat and other substances. These materials can fully block or reduce the effective flows in the drainage lines. It is important that pipe drainage cleanout will be accessible for servicing.
