Commonly made of cedar, redwood or cypress, wood shingles and shakes can give a house a more rustic look. The major difference between shingles and shakes it that shakes have at least one rough textured side that is created by splitting it from the mother log, while shingles both sides of shingles are sawn smoothly. It is recommended to apply weather proofing material every 5-6 years. Shingles and shakes are their susceptibility to fire, relatively high cost, and the time it takes to install them. Make sure you contractor uses non rusting nails to fasten the shingles or shakes to the walls.
