Small Kitchen and Bath Projects with a Big Impact
(ARA) - The guest-filled holiday season is quickly approaching, and many families are looking for simple solutions to update high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms used by company. For those who can't afford a professional, or don't have advanced home improvement experience, finding inexpensive, do-it-yourself projects has become a common goal.
"Most families value the holiday season the same way they value their homes," says John Holba, Dremel product manager. "Families understand the importance of visiting, sharing and reflecting with loved ones and they take pride in having a well-maintained home to host special gatherings in."
This year, you don't have to break the bank just to make your home look its best. With a few easy steps, these projects can help modernize and brighten spaces and make a big impact on your kitchen or bathroom:
* Tile Grout
Removing and replacing tile grout is a small renovation project that pays big dividends in appearance and most homeowners find the project simple enough to do on their own. One of the primary reasons people replace grout is because of mold accumulation. The first step is to remove the existing grout material. Instead of fighting with slow removal solutions, invest in an inexpensive power tool equipped with an attachment designed specifically for quick grout removal. Try the new Dremel Multi-Max Oscillating Tool or a rotary tool with a grout removal blade - both will grind the old grout away in a matter of minutes. Then, thoroughly clean the areas where the existing grout was removed before adding the new grout between tiles. Remember to follow the grout manufacturer's directions for a proper job.
* Cabinet Hardware
Replacing hardware on cabinets is a fast and inexpensive way to give kitchens and bathrooms a personal touch and bring them up to date. To do this, the only tools you will need are a basic ruler or measurement guide and a cordless power screwdriver. First, make sure you know how many knobs and pulls you need. Then, take a trip to your local home improvement store and pick out your hardware. In the span of one afternoon, your kitchen and bathroom can have a fresh new look.
* Caulk
Removing and replacing caulk in your tub or shower can give your bathroom a cleaner appearance and prevent water from getting behind walls or flooring. First remove the old caulk by using an oscillating tool equipped with a flexible scraper blade. Make one pass underneath the old caulk and one pass on top of the old caulk to pry it free from the wall. Once the old caulk has been removed, make sure that the area is completely dry before adding new caulk. Be sure the new caulk is a mildew-resistant product and keep a bucket of water and a roll of paper towels nearby to remove any excess material.
* Paint
Repainting your cabinets can completely change the look of your kitchen or bathroom and can be accomplished using only a paint brush and a detail sanding tool. First, use an all-purpose cleaner to make sure that all of the surfaces you are going to paint are completely cleaned. Once they are dry, sand all flat surfaces to remove old paint or varnish. If you own an oscillating tool, attach the sanding pad with 80 grit sandpaper for quick paint or varnish removal. A sheet of sandpaper also works nicely. Next, apply primer. After sanding, apply a thin coat of paint with your brush and let it dry completely before adding a second coat. Sand between coats using 240 grit sandpaper, if needed. In most cases, two to three coats will be sufficient.
* Bath Linens and Shower Curtain
Even replacing your bath linens or shower curtain can help renew your bathroom. Try out different color schemes or simply purchase higher quality linens. Get creative and your guests will notice.
