A Retro Look for Your Kitchen

One of the most enjoyable rooms in your home to decorate is the kitchen. You can add bright colors and fun designs that you would never think about placing in the bedroom or living room. When it comes time to redecorate your kitchen, you have so many different themes to choose from. Some of the most popular and common themes for kitchen decor is country, rustic, beach, Italian, and cottage. However, the retro is starting to grow in popularity as well. While most people don’t think about the retro theme, it is definitely one to consider and it is easy to do.

Retro style kitchen

The retro look is based on the modern designs of the 1960’s through the 1970’s. This was a time when decor was simple but colorful. If you want to create a retro look for your kitchen, here are some fun ways to get it.

Colors of Retro

When it came to colors of retro, the main colors you would see in the kitchen would be brown, orange, and a mod blue. These colors were the most popular and could be incorporated throughout the kitchen from the dinnerware to the colors on the walls. If you are going for the retro decor in your kitchen, you want to make sure that everything matches so go to your local paint store and buy the paints then get a few of the paint cards with these colors so you can carry with you as you collect decorations to fit into your kitchen.

Since the main look of retro is going to be vintage you will need to explore in thrift shops and other places where the decor of yesteryear is sold. You want vintage style knick-knacks on your shelves and an older style table and chairs. You can buy this used or you can find new ones in furniture stores since the retro look is coming back.

Accessories

The windows will speak retro if you hang an older vintage style pair of curtains up. These curtain designs should be simple and yet very decorative. If you don’t know where to find any, make a pair out of off white material. Two straight panels that can be tied back will be just right.

The walls should be kept simple by hanging an atomic clock on the wall and one or two pieces of vintage artwork. Shelves are also popular because they can display some of the designs and styles that were alive back then. Salt and pepper shaker collections or old cookie jars are some of the popular items that can sit on your shelf.

You will need good lighting in your kitchen. It’s important to have the right amount of lighting because of everything you do in your kitchen. Lighting fixtures can also be retro. Accessorize with orange, blue, or white. Have a light hanging down over the table, where you prepare your meals, or anywhere else you have lighting in your kitchen.

The floors should contain area rugs with a retro look. Shag rugs were popular back then in a wide variety of colors; orange rugs, aqua, brown rugs, and avocado were the most popular choices.
