Remodeling a Small Bathroom

Because the bathroom is usually one of the smallest rooms in the house, there are size constraints that must be taken into consideration during remodeling. Although some homes certainly have large and luxurious bathrooms, most bathrooms are a bit on the small side. If you're planning a bathroom remodeling job at your house, here are some tips you can use to make the most of the space you have.

Choose Space-Efficient Fixtures

Although you might love the look of a large sink and vanity, it will definitely cut into your available bathroom space. Instead, try adding a beautiful pedestal sink. If you miss the extra storage that a vanity sink provides, add an extra wall cabinet or shelf. By using a pedestal sink, you'll open up the floor space in the bathroom, making the entire room look and feel more spacious. You can use this same space-efficient strategy when planning your bathtub and shower area. Choosing a bathtub with a shorter profile can help make the room seem larger. A corner shower enclosure can also help make good use of your bathroom floor space.

It can also be helpful to carefully examine the overall layout of the bathroom. Sometimes you can create the illusion of more space simply by moving the shower or bathtub to a different area of the room. Although you'll certainly have some additional plumbing costs to add to your remodeling project budget, the end results can often be worth the expense. Look for ways to keep fixtures, storage areas and accessories as close to the walls as possible. By keeping the center of the room as open and accessible, you'll make the room seem larger. Anything that cuts into the center of the bathroom or sticks out in any way will make the room seem smaller. Recessed shelving and cabinets are also great choices for the bathroom, since they fit flush with the wall surfaces.

Create the Illusion of Size

In addition to actually maximizing your bathroom floor space, there's also a lot you can do visually to increase the perceived size of the room. For example, by using light colors in the bathroom, you'll make the room seem larger. You can also create the illusion of spaciousness by using mirrors to reflect the light. As an added bonus, mirrors are always a handy feature to have in the bathroom. Add spaciousness, light and storage to the bathroom by choosing a large recessed medicine cabinet.

By choosing a cabinet that is designed to fit into the wall instead of being mounted flush, you'll create more space in the bathroom. Replacing frosted shower doors with a shower curtain or a clear glass door can also make the room seem larger, since you'll be able to see the entire area. Use a light color of paint on the bathroom walls, and paint the ceiling white to increase the visual perception of size in the room. If you want to use wallpaper, a small pattern will work better in a small room as compared to a larger pattern.
