Focusing On Kitchen Countertops as Your Next Renovation Project

If you have half a mind to sell your home in the near future, you are going to need to focus on your kitchen at one time or another.  It is one of the most scrutinized spots within any home when a buyer is doing his or her walk-through, and often a point of negotiation if the room is subpar.  The news will not be pleasant for you if your old countertops and cabinets need fixing.  In fact, you’ll see the value of your home drop in accordance with what it will take to solve these problems.  On the other hand, there is little point in waiting for the day you decide to sell to start improving the state of things in your kitchen.  You should enjoy it yourself.  Here are five things to think about with countertop replacement.

1. Though somewhat unconventional, copper countertops are one of the best choices you can make.  If you want to set your home apart and add a true touch of class in the kitchen, copper countertops are a great place to start.  The nonporous surface will keep out bacteria and the surface will last for an extremely long period of time.  You will need to keep up with the care to maintain that stunning, warm finish, but like shining a beautiful car, it’s worth it in the end.

2. Tile counters don’t have the magazine appeal, but are very cost effective.  Tile counters are not going to register on the “sexiest home ideas” list, but they are inexpensive when compared to the stone and metal options and can be the easiest choice when it comes to maintenance.  Need to fix a cracked tile?  That job can be pulled off in a few minutes.  Just stock up on extras when you buy your initial supply.

3. Consider wood as a partial alternative for any countertop replacement.  Butcher block counters were all the rage for a while, and for good reason.  They have a charming rustic look, they are great for cutting and they last much longer than people think.  As far as care goes, you will need to keep a generous supply of wood oils on hand so the surface does not lose its finish.

4. Granite is still one of the most sought-after lines.  Even though many people thought granite counters were just too popular, they have proven to be a winning choice for obvious reasons.  Impervious to high temperatures and stains, granite is a durable material and has a tremendous natural beauty that can fit into any kitchen design.

5. Engineered stone can bring you the benefits of granite without the same maintenance.  If there’s one knock on granite countertops, it will be in the maintenance department.  Engineered stone can give your kitchen the same character and durability without requiring much in the way of care.  Price-wise, it’s on the same level as granite.
