Retrofitting a Whirlpool Tub

If you don't plan on doing a full bathroom remodel but want to replace your standard bathtub with a whirlpool tub, there are options that can make this an easy task. In the past, whirlpool tubs were almost always larger than standard tubs, which made retrofitting one somewhat difficult. Today, you'll find many whirlpool tub styles that are designed to take up no more room than the average bathtub. This can be a great way to upgrade your bathroom without the need to remodel completely.

However, many people do decide to install a larger whirlpool tub, even when replacing an existing bathtub. In many cases, this can be done without too much extra construction. However, adding a larger tub will usually require tearing out at least part of a bathroom wall, and will often require moving the bathroom drain to accommodate the larger sized tub. You will probably also have to open up one or more of the walls surrounding the tub, in order to remove the old one. In some cases, you might also have to remove the toilet or sink, at least temporarily, to provide enough room to remove the old tub and install the new whirlpool tub, particularly if your bathroom is small. This can be especially true if the tub you are removing is made from cast iron and cannot be easily cut into pieces for removal.

Installing a Whirlpool Tub in New Construction or as Part of a Major Remodel

Adding a whirlpool tub as part of a major bathroom remodeling project can open up a lot more design options. The same is true, of course, with new construction. In these cases, you can easily choose any tub size you desire, as long as you have enough bathroom floor space to accommodate it. There are also freestanding whirlpool tubs, which can make a strong design statement in the larger bathroom.

Installation Tips

If you are installing the whirlpool tub yourself, you will want to check first to make sure you are familiar with any permits that may be required, such as an electrical permit. Every tub is a little different, so you'll want to follow the installation instructions exactly. If you need to move plumbing in order to install the new tub, hire a plumber unless you know you are up for the task. After the installation is complete, you'll want to check the tub carefully to make sure nothing is leaking. Then, simply relax and enjoy the comfort of your new whirlpool tub.
