Designing a Hobby Room

If you enjoy crafts and other hobbies but never seem to have enough work space, converting a spare bedroom into a hobby room could be the perfect home improvement project. This project can usually be accomplished easily with a minimum of construction or expense. In many cases, simply adding some cabinets and tabletop work space can transform a seldom-used room into a craft room that you'll use on a daily basis. Most people find that they get more enjoyment from their crafts and hobbies once they have a dedicated room to work in. If you're planning to design a craft room, here are some tips that can help you get started.

Design the Room to Fit Your Needs

Every craft and hobby is different, so you should carefully assess your needs before designing your room. For example, if you enjoy scrapbooking, add plenty of cabinets and file drawers which can be used to store paper and other supplies. A comfortable chair and good lighting are necessities if your hobby is knitting, crocheting or other needlework crafts. If your hobby tends to be somewhat messy, such as pottery or painting, choosing a washable floor surface would be the smart choice. Give some thought to the challenges you've experienced in other rooms of your home while trying to enjoy your craft or hobby.

Then think of ways that these situations could be improved, and find ways to add these features to your new hobby room. It could be something as simple as installing a paper towel dispenser or as complex as building a custom-made work bench. However, if you like to participate in your craft or hobby frequently, even pricier room additions can be worthwhile. It's important to remember that your leisure activities should be as enjoyable and stress-free as possible, so indulge yourself in a few room amenities that will enhance your craft or hobby experience. Good lighting is also an important consideration for a hobby room.

Adding Storage Space

Storage space is an important consideration for most crafts and hobbies. Stock kitchen cabinets such as those available at most home improvement stores can be the perfect economical solution. Even inexpensive cabinets can be quite serviceable in the hobby room for storing supplies. If your room is small, white or light-colored wood cabinets are often the best choice, as they will make the room seem larger. You can add both base and upper cabinets if desired, depending on your needs and available room space. Or, install upper cabinets and use a large folding table as a work space for maximum flexibility.

Wall shelves, stackable bins and full-height bookcases are also a great way to add additional storage space to a hobby room. If the room has a closet, consider adding a closet organization system to maximize its storage capacity. Since most bedroom closets only include a simple shelf and clothes rod, adding an organization system can often greatly increase the usefulness of the closet space for a hobby room. Wall-mounted bins and organizers can add the perfect finishing touch.
