7 Great Ways to Update your Fireplace

A fireplace is not only a functional home feature, but also one that can add a lot of charm and style to a room. However, sometimes an existing fireplace can become outdated, and can benefit from a little updating to make it more visually appealing.

Tip #1 - Painting the Fireplace

Although not everybody is open to the idea of painting a fireplace, this can often be a good way of updating an older style fireplace to blend in with modern décor. Although a brick or stone finished fireplace can add a lot of charm, often these types of finishes become dingy over the years, or look too dark or imposing in a room. By adding a coat of paint, you can really brighten up your fireplace, which can add a fresh new look to the entire room.

Tip #2 - Replacing the Fireplace Mantel

Sometimes all it takes to update the look of an older fireplace is adding a new mantel. This can give the entire fireplace a custom look, and can greatly improve the overall look of the fireplace, especially if the original mantel is faded, sagging or simply outdated. You can also add a mantel to a fireplace that doesn't already have one to improve the overall look.

Tip #3 - Use Tile

Tile can be applied directly over the existing finish of your fireplace. This technique can be used to cover outdated or dingy brick, or to create a more impressive fireplace appearance by applying the tiles directly to the wall surrounding the fireplace.

Tip #4 - Slate and Stone

Slate and stone finishes add a very stylish and rustic look to a fireplace. There are a number of products that can be applied directly over your existing fireplace finish which can really provide an updated look. These products come in a wide variety of color choices, so you'll have plenty of options from which to choose.

Tip #5 - Install a Fireplace Surround

You can completely change the look of your existing fireplace by simply using a fireplace surround. These are available at home improvement centers, or you might choose to build your own. There are plenty of options as far as styles are concerned, so you can choose just the right look for your home.

Tip #6 Consider a Gas Fireplace

Sometimes you might love the look of a fireplace, but just don't want the mess and upkeep of burning wood. Although many people strongly prefer a wood-burning fireplace, there are also advantages to installing a gas fireplace instead. They are clean, easy to maintain, and convenient, without requiring you to purchase, cut or haul wood. For some people, a gas fireplace conversion is the best choice for getting additional enjoyment out of an existing fireplace.

Tip #7 - Simple Decorating Options

If you want to update the look of your fireplace, but none of these other options are within your budget, you can provide a lot of additional visual appeal to your fireplace simply through decorating. Add a small collection of photos, or perhaps a floral display. By creating a visual focal point, you will draw the attention away from the fireplace itself.
